What I'm Writing: A New World
We live in a new world. It is not a good one. We are watching a nuclear-armed power use precision weapons to blow up civilians and chase those who survive around an extermination camp from which they cannot escape. After a brief ceasefire, the Israeli bombardment of Gaza restarted, and the death tolls have only climbed. Israel killed between 700 and 1,000 Gazans in a single day, including more journalists. They also announced their intention to destroy medical supplies in World Health Organization warehouses. Never before has a genocide been carried out so brazenly.
This moment is a test that the world is failing. After watching Gaza be turned into a charnel house – children with no limbs, with their heads blown open, with their intestines hanging out – it should not be difficult for Joe Biden and Rishi Sunak to intervene and say, "Enough. They've had enough." Even so, the slaughter continues. One of the tools of death is disease.
I'm still working on my essay collection, Welcome to the Zombie Apocalypse: Notes on Collapse from the Covid-19 Pandemic (I tweaked the subtitle a bit). There are reports that Covid is rampant in Gaza. My latest essay discusses some of the the connections between the pandemic and the genocide in Gaza. I hope you'll read it:
