What I'm Reading: Settlers and Protest in Sports
Hello everyone,
Like most of the world, I'm focused on what is happening in Gaza and engaging with media about the topic. Along the way, I've come across several pieces of interest. Today, I'll share two.
First up is a piece from The New Yorker that went somewhat viral. In it, Isaac Chotiner interviews an Israeli settler, whose views shed important light on why the situation in Gaza has devolved so violently.
The Extreme Ambitions of West Bank Settlers
Next is a piece by Dave Zirin in The Nation. Much of Zirin's work focuses on sports as an avenue for protest and social justice work. Here, he discusses suppression of support for Palestine through the lens of German football club Mainz's decision to terminate the contract of footballer Anwar El Ghazi for showing solidarity with Palestine.
There Is No Space in the Sports World to Call for a Free Palestine
As the humanitarian crisis in Gaza worsens and the violence spreads to the West Bank, it is my hope that the international community can come together and broker a ceasefire that leads to a just peace.
I'm also sharing my thoughts on these issues as well as other articles and media on Instagram and Twitter. My handle is @kitanyaharrison on both sites.
Thanks for reading.
