New Project! (and a Reading Recommendation)
Hi everyone,
First off: Thanks again for subscribing! I haven't been actively online much because I needed a change in perspective that I believe I've found. I'm working on a new collection of essays about the pandemic, and I will share more about the project as it develops. Here's an example of what to expect from a published essay of mine:
Welcome to the Zombie Apocalypse of "Living With Covid"
We are living through strange, unprecedented times. The change in perspective I mentioned came from having to confront and interrogate my sources of inspiration. For many of us, that is art of some kind – something another human being makes that moves us. It's harder for me to connect with certain work now because the world has changed (or been revealed), and so have I. In a way, I've been sorting out what story to tell and how.
Cultural criticism has been my wheelhouse for some time, but I don't know if I've been as sharp and incisive as I could have. I recently read a piece that made me want to get back into writing more about culture and art. I'm not sure how many of you are hip hop fans, but the genre is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Even if you're not a fan, I think this piece discusses the commercialization and neutering of art in a way that speaks to this moment in history, and I hope you'll check it out:
After 50 Years, Is There Anything Left of Hip Hop?
Thanks for reading! I'll be back with more soon!
